The input needs to be 3 Volts or higher than the output voltage and can be from either a DC or AC voltage source. 78XX Regulated Power Supply Kit Philmore DATAKit # 80-600 This circuit can be made into a regulated power supply for voltages from five volts up to twenty-four volts.The user must add any of the standard 78xx TO-220 positive regulators 7805 or 7806 or etc...thru 7824) and the voltage will equal which ever part you select (the last two digits of the number indicates voltage; 705 = five volts etc.). Input AC or DC (unregulated) about three volts greater then the desired output voltage, complete instructions included. The 7800 series outputs up to one ampere typically. LED indicator and on-board on/off switch. You could use this with a junk box AC or DC power supply or supply your own transformer etc.. 	Variable Power Supply Philmore DATAKit # 80-680 A very basic power supply that can be adjusted over a range of about 1.5 to 35 volts DC. If you add a heat sink (included), you can run it "hot" at 2 amps output; otherwise about 60mA @12 volts. This is a text book circuit using an LM317, which is a 3 terminal regulator in a TO-220 package. Input can be either AC or DC; DC input must be at least 2.5V above the required output voltage. Variable Power Supply Philmore DATAKit # 80-970 The kit comes "complete", which means the transformer, power cord and fuse holder are included. Most power supply kits leave finding such things to the builder. Output is via screw terminals, making this a good bench supply for the kit builder. Voltage may be varied up to about 24 volts DC and is well regulated; i.e. the voltage is very stable. Using the LM317T I.C. and the included 24 volt, 1 amp transformer permits an output range from about a volt to 21 volts. Higher current is available at the higher voltages but lower voltage are at lower currents; for example, around 5 volts the maximum output is around 350 mA. Maximum current is available in the 18 to 22 volt range . Ripple (on line noise) is finite, making this a good kit for those audio and R.F. projects where you do not care to hear power line noise. Note: We do not recommend a beginner build this kit unless he or she has some experienced supervision to help.
